Tripod + Full Optical and Full digital zoom at 400 ISO.

The sky picks up a lot of noise. I used picassa (poor man's photoshop, not quite) to darken the shadows. On the D50 you could do this if you used the 55-200 lens (and a teleconverter if you want even more zoom). Try to use a tripod.
